Maryland Regulations for Friable Asbestos
In the state of Maryland, all activities involving the disturbance of friable asbestos must be licensed by MDE. This includes contractors, businesses and other entities.
The license must be obtained prior to starting any work. It is valid for one year from the date of the application and must be carried by any workers working on projects requiring friable asbestos removal.
School – As part of the federal Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act, all schools subject to this law must have their buildings inspected for asbestos and develop an asbestos management plan. The Maryland Department of Education provides technical assistance and compliance inspections to these schools.
Facility Employees – MDE regulations require facilities employees who maintain or engage in asbestos abatement and removal to be trained and certified by the school’s Public Health and Environmental Safety Office. They must also have a clearance air sampling report and disposal manifest for all material removed from the building.
All employees who have asbestos work duties must wear a tyvek suit with a hood that covers their head to the ground and also wear a dust mask rated by NIOSH at either N100, P100, or R100. This will help to ensure that all particles of asbestos are not inhaled into the lungs.
